911 Telecommunicator

This is a 40 hour Basic Telecommunicator Course that is required of all call takers. Telecommunicators will be instructed on the basic information required to dispatch calls for law enforcement, fire and EMS services. NECI certification received upon successful completion.

Active Shooter Response

This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and is designed to instruct the first responding police officer who is the first responder on proper procedures to an active shooter call. The class will consist of both classroom and tactical hands-on instruction on proper approaches and containment procedures to ensure safety of all the persons involved at an active shooter call.

Advanced Investigator/Detective Course

This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. It is a comprehensive two day continuing education course for the Investigator/Detective. Course topics include basic crime scene photography, advanced latent fingerprint development including blood print development, use of alternate light sources, interviewing and interrogation, videotaped statements and advanced search warrant preparation.

Basic Course for Police Officers

The Basic Course for Police Officers consists of training mandated by the Police Training Commission. This includes physical fitness, firearms training, and other practical exercises. The academy also conducts Simmunitions Training, Boxing, Water Rescue, CPR and AED. Applicants must be sworn, full-time employees of a municipal, county, state institution, or qualified alternate route candidates and conform to all standards prescribed by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. Periodic drug screening of all trainees is conducted during this course. This residential program has been extremely well received. The program offers meals and lodging, issued computer laptops a computer lab for use by the recruits.

Basic Investigator/Detective Course

This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. It is a comprehensive one day course designed for the new Investigator/Detective. Course topics include safeguarding and processing the crime scene, latent fingerprint development, proper evidence handling and submission, basic interviewing and taking of statements, photo line-up procedures, introduction to search warrant preparation, and use of and preparing consensual interceptions.

Basic Marksmanship

This In-County course is designed for shooters who have problems during agency qualifications. It will also enhance the shooting ability of any officer. The drills and techniques taught in this course focus upon the shooting fundamentals and to correct shooter errors such as improper trigger control and follow-through.
Equipment and ammunition requirements: Duty handgun, magazines, all related leather gear, flashlight, rain gear, eye and ear protection, 1000 rounds of duty equivalent handgun ammunition.

Cape May County Citizens Police Academy

These informational classes are designed to provide an opportunity for the class attendee to gain a clearer perspective of law enforcement. Equally important, law enforcement can gain knowledge of the needs of the very citizens we represent. This course is instructed by various Chiefs of Police from Cape May County. Program topics include: Overview of the Criminal Justice System, Police Training Requirements, The Police Mission, Budget/Manpower, Communications, Criminal/Juvenile Law, Crime Prevention and Crime Scenes, Traffic Related Activities, Use of Force, K-9 Usage, Domestic Violence, Community Policing, First Aid and CPR Certification.

Drug Recognition/Drug Laws for the Patrol Officer

This four hour course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and is designed for the uniformed patrol officer, which covers the CDS Act, Drug Identification/Recognition, Concealment, Packaging and Handling.

Emergency Medical Dispatcher

The 32-hour Emergency Medical Dispatcher Course is required of all call takers. This course is designed to effectively direct and manage their emergency medical resources. This course primarily focuses on the medical side of dispatching. Completion of this class carries 21 continuing education units for EMT’s.

PRE-REQUISITE: Successful completion of a 40-hour Basic Telecommunicators Course and valid Basic CPR Certification Card.

Firearms Instructor

This New Jersey Police Training Commission approved course is designed to instruct department officers who will be assigned the task of instructing and certifying officers in the use and care of firearms. Instruction of methodology, firearms policy, testing and operation of a firearm range will be reviewed. Officers will be required to furnish their duty weapon, shotgun and ammunition. The Officer must fire one score of at least 95% on the regular handgun to qualify for this course.

Investigative Photography

This one day course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and is designed to prepare the crime scene investigator in the photography of a crime scene. The procedures necessary for a complete and thorough recording of a crime scene will be discussed and demonstrated. Preparing for proper courtroom presentations will also be discussed. Students will have hands-on practical experience on photography and preparing for courtroom presentation. Department issued equipment required.

Methods of Instruction

The New Jersey Police Training Commission approved course is designed for officers who plan on teaching at police schools and/or their respective departments. This course covers selecting methods, establishing goals and performance objectives, constructing lesson plans, testing and evaluation, psychology of learning, effective speaking, principals of learning, use of training aids and instruction on Microsoft Power Point for presentations. The student will be required to deliver a 10 and 20 minute presentation complete with lesson plans. The 20-minute lesson plan will be reviewed by an instructor with the student. Must have three (3) years full-time police officer experience.

NJSP – Alcotest 7110 MKIII-C Initial Operator Training

This four-day course certifies new Alcotest operators. Students will be trained how to properly conduct a breath test using the Alcotest as well as how to properly change the simulator solution. In order to participate in this training, a student must be a sworn law enforcement officer for a period of at least one year.

NJSP – Alcotest 7110 MKIII-C Recertification Training

This four-hour class recertifies Alcotest operators. Students will be trained how to properly conduct a breath test using the Alcotest as well as how to properly change the simulator solution. In order to participate in this training, students must have completed their initial Alcotest course or a recertification class 2012 or 2013. Students are required to bring their Alcotest Operator cards for validation.

NJSP – DWI Detection – Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course

This five-day course is to assist law enforcement personnel in detecting impaired drivers. Students will learn how to administer and interpret the three Standardized Field Sobriety Tests including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test, the Walk and Turn Test, and One Leg Stand Test.

NJSP – DWI / SFST Refresher Course

The primary purpose of the “Four-Hour Driving While intoxicated/Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Refresher Course” is to improve the overall consistency of the administration of the SFST test battery by individual police officers. Officers can refresh their skills with recognizing and interpreting evidence of DWI, administering and interpreting the scientifically validated sobriety tests and describing the DWI evidence clearly and convincingly. In order to participate in this training, officers must have previously attended the five-day DWI Detection / SFST Course offered by the New Jersey State Police.

Search Warrant & Consensual Interception

This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office in a four hour session. This course will explore the proper procedures of applying for the drafting and the use of search warrants and consensual interceptions for various police investigations. Use of witnesses and informants will be discussed as well as preparing for courtroom testimony. All students will prepare a search warrant and/or a consensual interception application based on a mock scenario assigned to them.

Sex Crimes Investigation

This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. This one day course demonstrates the practices and procedures in the investigation of sexual assault, molestation, etc. A few of the topics discussed will be awareness of the psychological as well as the physical effects of the victims, evidence for prosecution of offenders, interview and interrogation techniques, as well as preparing for court testimony.

SLEO Class I Download PDF file

The Special Officer Class I is certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. This 80-hour course provides training in PR-24, handcuffing, defensive tactics, disorderly person’s offences, first aid, use of force, various patrol concepts, and ethics. Upon graduation, the student will be a PTC certified Class One Special Law Enforcement Officer.

SLEO Class II (Summer)

The Special Officer Class II consists of over 460 hours of training mandated by the Police Training Commission. This course covers similar material as the basic class. The accelerated summer training begins in May and ends in June. The course runs eleven weeks, Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Upon graduation, students will be PTC certified as a Class Two Special Law Enforcement Officer.

SLEO Class II (Winter)

Upon graduation, students will be PTC certified as a Class Two Special Law Enforcement Officer.
