911 Telecommunicator

This is a 40-hour Basic Telecommunicator Course that is required of all call takers.  Telecommunicators will be instructed on the basic information required to dispatch calls for law enforcement, fire and EMS services.  NECI Certification received upon successful completion.

Active Shooter Response

This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and is designed to instruct the police officer who is the first responder on the proper procedures to an active shooter call, to ensure his safety and that of all the persons involved at an active shooter call.  The class will consist of both classroom and tactical hands on instruction on proper approaches and containment procedures.

ATV Operator Certification

This course is open to all police, beach patrol and emergency personnel. Topics include introduction to safety awareness, preparing to ride and getting familiar with your ATV, starting your ATV, riding strategies, turning, quick stops and swerving, riding over obstacles, riding on hills, and safe handling practices.

Basic Course for Police Officers

Residential

The Basic Course for Police Officers consists of 665 hours of training mandated by the Police Training Commission. This includes over 85 hours of physical fitness, 33 hours of firearms training, and practical exercises. The academy also employs simmunition handgun and weapon training, boxing, and will additionally certify recruits in Red Cross Community Water Rescue, CPR, AED and Radar. Applicants must be sworn, full-time employees of a municipal, county, state institution, or qualified alternate route candidates and conform to all standards prescribed by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. Periodic drug screening of all trainees is conducted during this course. Confirmation of drugs in the trainee’s urine will result in immediate dismissal.

This residential program has been extremely well received. The program offers meals and lodging, a computer lab for use by the recruits.  Recruits are issued a computer laptop if needed. Call for information or a tour of the facilities.

Cape May County Citizens Police Academy

These informational classes are designed to provide an opportunity for the class attendee to gain a clearer perspective of law enforcement. Equally important, law enforcement can gain knowledge of the needs of the very citizens we represent. This course is instructed by various Chiefs of Police from Cape May County. Program topics include:  Overview of the Criminal Justice System, Police Training Requirements, The Police Mission, Budget/Manpower, Communications, Criminal/Juvenile Law, Crime Prevention and Crime Scenes, Traffic Related Activities, Use of Force, K-9 Usage, Domestic Violence, and Community Policing.

Drug Recognition/Drug Laws for the Patrol Officer

Emergency Medical Dispatcher

The 32-hour Emergency Medical Dispatcher Course is required of all call takers.  This course is designed to effectively direct and manage their emergency medical resources.  This course primarily focuses on the medical side of dispatching.  Completion of this class carries 21 continuing education units for EMT’s.  (Refresher is available the first 3 days of course)

Domestic Violence

Offered to Cape May County Police Departments Only

This block of instruction will introduce the student to an overview of domestic violence. Instruction will be given on what domestic violence is and the effects on everyone involved. The student will have an understanding of the domestic violence registry and working with victims of trauma. An introduction to stalking will also be discussed. The class will also cover rules to a safe response to domestic violence calls, police officers and domestic violence, and risk assessment of a domestic violence caller as a dispatcher. Any overview of county policy, police response, and discussion of profiling a domestic violence assailant will also be presented.

FBI – A Tactical Approach to Media Interaction

This one day class is designed for all levels of law enforcement personnel who interact with media.  The focus of this course will be to develop a media strategy beginning with a simple press release formula.  Students will learn to use the formula to develop verbal statements and guide press conferences.  This course will culminate in a mock press conference exercise and critique.

FBI – Advanced Criminal Investigation

This five day course is designed for newer investigators to provide an introduction to various types of advanced criminal investigative techniques, as well as provide specific knowledge that law enforcement officers can use in their day-to-day activities.  Blocks of instruction are designed primarily for patrol officers and include gang identification and culture, major case management, child sexual exploitation, undercover matters, evidence recovery, human trafficking and narcotics detection and concealment.

FBI – Identifying Warning Signs of School Violence

This four day course is designed for the first in-line supervisors in law enforcement departments and/or agencies and includes an examination of interpersonal communication, ethical considerations, managing the problem employee, motivation, delegation, problem-solving and stress management.  Also, included are DISC behavior assessments, Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership II Model and practical exercises in management and leadership.

Firearms Instructor Course

This course is designed to instruct department personnel who will be assigned the task of instructing and certifying officers in the use and care of firearms. Subjects include instruction in methodology, firearms policy, testing and operation of a firearm range. Officers will be required to furnish their duty weapon, shotgun and ammunition. New Jersey Police Training Commission approved course.  The officer must fire one score of at least 95% on the regular handgun qualification course to enter the program.

Investigative Photography & Videotaping

This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. This two (2) day course is designed to prepare the crime scene investigator in the filming and photography of a crime scene.  The procedures necessary for a complete and thorough recording of a crime scene will be discussed and demonstrated. Preparing for proper courtroom presentations will also be discussed. Students will have hands-on practical experience on filming and photography and preparing for courtroom presentation.

Methods of Instruction

The New Jersey Police Training Commission approved course is designed for individuals who plan to teach at police schools and/or their respective departments.  This course covers selecting methods, establishing goals and performance objectives, constructing lesson plans, testing and evaluation, psychology of learning, effective speaking, principals of learning, use of training aids and instruction on Microsoft Power Point for presentations.  The student will be required to deliver a 10, 20, and 45 minute presentation complete with lesson plans. The 20-minute lesson plan will be videotaped and reviewed by an instructor with the student.

The ultimate goal of this course is to help prevent crashes, injuries, and deaths by improving enforcement of drug-impaired driving violations. The class focuses on the awareness and recognition of the drug-impaired driver and is an interim level of training designed for highly motivated law enforcement officers who are considering attending the Drug Recognition Expert Course.

NJSP - Crash Investigation One

This two week course is designed to give patrol officers with little or no formal training in accident investigation better insight into proper interpretation and gathering of physical evidence at a motor vehicle collision. The course will teach the student the proper techniques for recognizing and properly gathering critical evidence that may be used to reconstruct a crash at a later date. Officers will learn how to make measurements, sketches, after accident diagrams, and properly photograph the scene.

Proactive Police Supervision

Offered to Cape May County Police Departments Only        

This 3 day seminar is designed and recommended for sergeants and lieutenants (or persons to be promoted in the near future) who are assigned as patrol supervisors or in search of substantial review.  The focus of this course is for operational aspects of first line supervision with special emphasis on those likely challenges one may expect to encounter.  It fuses the actual practice of law enforcement theoretical foundation by integrating relevant New Jersey case law, court rules and statues.

Included are review of supervisory responsibilities, involuntary commitment, civil liability summons/warrant criteria, OPRA ATRA, bounty hunters, and more.  This course is recommended for recently promoted first line supervisors and veteran supervisors in search of substantial review.

REID – The Reid Technique of Interview and Interrogation

This four day class is being hosted by Middle Township Police Department.  The Reid Techniques course teaches how to assess the credibility of statements, structure of the interview to maximize the flow of information and use the behavior provoking questions in the interview process.  The Reid Nine Steps of Interrogation also will teach you how to develop interrogation themes and handle denials and to overcome objections and alternative questions.

In the Advanced class you will learn to psychologically profile suspects for interrogation, develop specialized tactics for juvenile interrogations and much more.

Search Warrant & Consensual Interception

This course is being presented by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office in a four hour session.  This course will explore the proper procedures of applying for the drafting and the use of search warrants and consensual interceptions for various police investigations. Use of witnesses and informants will be discussed as well as preparing for courtroom testimony. All students will prepare a search warrant and/or a consensual interception application based on a mock scenario assigned to them.

SLEO Class I

The Special Officer Class I is certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. This 80-hour course provides training in PR-24, handcuffing, defensive tactics, disorderly person’s offences, first aid, use of force, various patrol concepts, and ethics. Upon graduation, the student will be a PTC certified Class One Special Officer.

SLEO Class II

The Special Officer Class II consists of over 459 hours of training mandated by the Police Training Commission. This course covers similar material as the basic class. There are two programs offered. The winter class begins in December and goes through May. These classes are held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00PM to 10:00PM and all day Saturday. The summer training class is offered from May until the end of June and is seven and one half weeks. The course runs six days per week 7:00AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Saturday. Upon graduation, students will be PTC certified as a Class Two Special Officer.
